November Is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and it serves as a crucial reminder that radon is the primary cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Also, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Children are twice as susceptible to the negative impacts of radon than adults. Current and former smokers are ten times more susceptible. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are 20 time more susceptible to radon.

Radon is listed as a priority issue in the In order to reduce risks, North Carolinians have questions about whether or not they should test their indoor air for radon. Those who receive their drinking water from well water also have questions as to when they should test their well water for radon.

The following webpage has been created to provide guidance on answering these questions. A guidance document has been created for each of North Carolina’s 100 counties.

This document includes county-specific resources related to guidance for testing, as well as a geological image of the county. Additional links include information addressing increased risks to children, smokers and second-hand smoking.
