Lead is a heavy metal found naturally in the earth’s crust; and for many years it was used extensively in construction and plumbing, among other things, due to its unique properties. However, in the late 19th century it was discovered that lead is highly toxic to mammals; and when high levels of this neurotoxin accumulate in the body it can lead to convulsions, coma, and even death.
Today, the group that are most at risk of lead poisoning are adults in the workplace; particularly those working in the smelting, refining, alloying, and casting sector.
